A recent report published by the Global Witness recorded 212 murdered land and environmental defenders last year—making it the deadliest year on record for people defending their homes, forests, and rivers against climate-destructive industries. Oil, Gas, Mining and Agribusiness are considered to be the predominant drivers fuelling attacks against climate activists. Across the globe last year, 40% of murdered defenders belonged to indigenous communities – even though these communities only make up 5% of the worlds population.
